It's far easier to see the diversity in the community known as Santa Carla when the night belongs to you. The Boardwalk, specifically, where the summer parties rage into the late morning hours, the beach goers leaving their temporary signatures into the sand with every step, clueless and ignorant to what happens in the darkest shadows where they would normally never tread. Those shadows are David's playground.
David has known Santa Carla for years. His is an existence so engraved into the fabric of the community that he is nothing more than a whispered myth. Bodies that SCPD have recovered, obviously victims of foul play but without a clue on which to follow have led the younger generation to spin tales of vampires and other mythical creatures, even aliens, that might explain the mystery that surrounds the several tack-ridden boards on which have been pinned poster after poster of missing persons.
But even though the reigns of the darkness are in his hands, he is not without a leash of his own, loose though it may be. If David were the face of the myth, then Max was who wrote his speeches. Max was to Santa Carla what Jack the Ripper was to England; a shadow of his true self and with a pleasant shell, but beneath a ruthless, sadistic monster simply waiting for the right time to strike. Max is not without his priority, however, and death is not the only mission on his mind. Some greater purpose lies underneath his new venture.
A venture that came with what was to be a thorn in David's side. What started out to be a rivalry over a girl ended up with David discovering someone worthy of his predatory pack, and thus Michael was initiated into the group against his knowlege. Even after he discovered what David had done to change him, he was at the mercy of his vampire kin without help. That help came in the form of a little brother and a pair of vampire hunting kids who called themselves the Frog Brothers.
The brutal mid-afternoon killing of one of David's vampires in their cave home was the precursor to a battle that was spotlighted by the moonlight that rose that night. A vicious and bloody fight ensued, with the showdown between David and Michael. Blow for blow they exchanged, one overconfident in his victory and the other driven by such vengeful bloodthirst that, when Michael finally impaled David on spikes of antlers that had been haphazardly left in the open, no one thought twice of the vampire's fate. Little did they know, antlers don't kill vampires. |
